15 // Matthew 21:12-17 / Read

Today’s passage comes on the heels of Jesus’ unforgettable entrance into Jerusalem (see Matthew 21:1-11). Jesus had often retreated from the limelight in years past, but he lived these days for all to see. In fact, the Gospels seem to indicate that he intentionally drew attention to himself – the time had come for him to fulfill his mission and he wanted the world to know.

After arriving in Jerusalem, Jesus went to the temple. Think about the last time you were in a large, crowded place. Was it an airport? A festival? A sporting event? Something bigger?

The temple was created to be the House of God in the City of God. Jewish people from all over the world would come to the temple to worship God and experience his presence - and worship included offering sacrifices to make things right with God.

With all of this in mind, consider Jesus’ words and actions in vv. 12-13.

  • Imagine you are a bystander. What is this scene like? What are you seeing and hearing? How are you feeling?

  • Why was Jesus so mad about what was happening? What message did he send about the heart of God? Why was/is this message important?

Jesus then focused his attention on the weak and the vulnerable (vv. 14-15). He does amazing things for them and they respond by acknowledging him as the One God would send to save his people.

  • What grabs your attention most in vv. 14-16? Why?

Jesus broke into the lives of money changers and merchants, those with special needs, children, church people, lawyers and a crowd from around the world. We witness varied responses to his coming.

  • Consider where you’re at in life right now. What would it be like for Jesus to show up? How might you react? In what way(s) would you be prepared or unprepared?
