Psalm 21 / Read

Before reading any of the commentary or reflection questions below:

  • Identify the word, phrase or imagery that most grabs your attention from this psalm. Why is it grabbing your attention? What might the Lord be saying to you?

The context for this psalm is victory in battle. David, the writer, was the greatest king of ancient Israel and had experienced victory over his enemies. He had asked God to fight for him and God did.

  • What do you sense to have been David’s emotions as you read this psalm? What was the posture of his heart toward God?

  • Considering who David was as king, how might he have been tempted to take credit for the victory he experienced? What did his thanksgiving and praise to God reveal about his character?

  • To what degree do you regularly “rejoice in [the Lord’s] strength” (vv. 1) and “sing and praise [his] might” (vv. 13)"? If you do those things infrequently, why? What tends to keep you from doing so?

  • What would regularly acknowledging what God has done in your life enhance your joy and strengthen your faith?

Close your time in God’s Word with prayer. Thank and praise God for his strength and the specific victories he’s given you. Invite him to continue to be your strength in the battles to come. Reflect on the ultimate victory - victory over sin and death - that he’s given you in his son, Jesus Christ. How do these prayers free you to live for his glory and purposes today?
