20 // Genesis 18:1-15 / Read

In Genesis 18:2-8, we see Abraham eagerly offering hospitality to the three men who were passing by. Remember that he is fresh off of the interaction with the Lord in Genesis 17 in which their covenant with one another was reaffirmed and he was given a new name that accompanied the Lord’s promises to him. Yet there’s no indication in the text that Abraham was expecting the Lord to speak to him through these men. They were just another group of visitors.

God was obviously working in this moment, even though Abraham and Sarah weren’t expecting him to do so, because we read that these men deliver news about when Abraham and Sarah’s son would be born.

Jesus would one day say, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” (John 5:17)

  • Do you believe that God is always in control, always intentional and always accomplishing his work? Do you believe that he is inviting you to participate in the work that he is doing? How would your life change if you believed those things about him?

  • In general, how aware are you of what God is doing on a day-to-day basis? How would you know if God is working in your life or in the lives of the people around you?

  • Do you have any regular practices that help remind you that God is always present and always carrying out his purposes in the world? If not, what is one thing that you could start doing on a daily basis to focus your mind on who he is and look around to “see” what he’s doing - and get involved in it?
